Area residents and lake users are invited to participate in one of three upcoming public meetings hosted by theFox-Wolf Watershed Alliance (FWWA) as part of the Winnebago Waterways Program (WWP). The goal of these meetings is to engage watershed residents in efforts to improve, protect, and enjoy the waters within the Winnebago System. Lake Management Planning is one of two projects under the new Program.
Attendees will have the opportunity to provide input about various lake topics and sign-up for LMP Focus Groups.
The meetings are scheduled at the following times and locations:
- May 17th, Tuffy’s Outpost in Fond du Lac – 6pm to 8pm
- May 18th, Woodeye’s in Winneconne – 6pm to 8pm
- May 25th, Waverly Beach in Menasha – 6pm to 8pm
Motivated by results from past efforts, such as the Weigh-in on Winnebago project, Calumet, Fond du Lac, and Winnebago Counties initiated Lake Management Planning for Poygan, Winneconne, Butte des Morts, and Winnebago Lakes. Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance (FWWA), funded through a county contract and DNR grants, is working with the project Steering Committee to facilitate and advance Lake Management Planning.
The goal of this project is to coordinate, communicate, and partner to develop a framework for cooperation throughout the region to improve upon existing programs and efforts that aim to restore or protect the health of the Winnebago Lakes. This includes facilitating communication among stakeholders (including residents and lake users) and multiple agencies to advance collaborative regional efforts that address topics such as: water quality, habitat, fisheries, recreation, public health, and aquatic invasive species. We will strive to foster positive, long-term relationships with a variety of stakeholders to develop consistent and realistic lake management practices and procedures that benefit lake health and the local economy.
In order to achieve this goal, the project will:
- Advance lake management planning
- Pursue grants and other funding
- Engage the public and solicit input through outreach and education
- Ensure project transparency
