Plan for two-shift daycare center comes before council

The Common Council is scheduled Tuesday to review two proposals related to new daycare centers, including one that would provide services for parents who work second shift.

The two-shift daycare center is being developed as part of the Housing Authority’s renovation of the old Waite Grass Carpet Co. on Harrison Street between East Nevada and East Custer avenues.

The plan is to turn a structure at 223 E. Nevada Ave. into a child care facility that would include a gymnasium, outdoor playground, covered play area, kitchen and art room. The center would operate from 5:30 a.m. until 11 p.m. from Monday through Friday.

At full capacity the center would employ as many as 25 workers and accommodate 210 children.

The other proposed daycare center is at 1819 Witzel Ave. It would be converted from an existing space that is in a commercial office building. A connected outdoor play area is also part of the proposal.

Both daycare projects have been greenlighted by the Plan Commission.
