Letter to Oshkosh Families from Oshkosh Area School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vickie Cartwright
Dear Oshkosh Area School District Families,
Today has been a difficult day for our community as we reflect on and continue to process the traumatic event that occurred at Oshkosh West High School.
As previously communicated, the officer-involved shooting with one student that took place today was an isolated incident, and no other students or adults were involved. However, we all understand the very real fear and safety concerns that impacted our school community as we were faced with this difficult situation.
As we continue to process this experience, we want to inform you of various resources and supports that are in place and available to students, staff, and families. The Oshkosh Area School District will have mental health support available throughout the district from counselors, social workers and psychologists. These services will be available to all students and families beginning Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at multiple locations throughout the District as listed below.
● Perry Tipler Middle School from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019
● South Park Middle School from 9 a.m. to Noon on Wednesday, December 4, 2019
● Merrill Middle School from Noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019
● Roosevelt Elementary School from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019
Because it is difficult to predict how anyone will react to a traumatic event, we are prepared to support students in their varied responses. Additional resources are also available online at www.oshkosh.k12.wi.us/district/student-services/mental-health-resources.
As a reminder, all schools have been canceled for Wednesday, December 4, 2019. This includes all after-school activities for all schools in the Oshkosh Area School District.
We understand that many of our families have children in multiple schools and that the best way for children to navigate this situation is through the support of parents/guardians. We encourage families to access the support and counseling resources available as listed above.
As a school and as a district, we will be taking time on Wednesday to review all of our protocols to ensure we are prepared to welcome students back to school.
More information, including when school will resume for the Oshkosh Area School District and Oshkosh West High School, will be shared with families, students, and staff on Wednesday, December 4, 2019.
Our entire school community is deeply saddened to have been touched by such a traumatic experience. We want to assure you that the safety of our students is our top priority and that our school and district has a comprehensive emergency response plan in place to navigate safety situations.
We are grateful to our West High School students, staff, and families for following our safety procedures, as well as your patience and cooperation throughout this process.
Thank you for your ongoing support and understanding.
Dr. Vickie Cartwright, Superintendent of Schools – Oshkosh Area School District
