Contribute-Individual

Individual-Writing team members contributing to the Oshkosh Independent do not represent any business or specific organization.  The contributor should meet one of the following criteria:

A.  A community writer interested in a particular topic with at least a basic level of knowledge in that area.   This contributor will not limit content to a specific business or organization, and will not be a sales representative for a particular set of goods or services.

B.  A student / recent grad looking to gain field experience, build a resume, and improve local media.

C.  A professional writer seeking employment.  Unfortunately, the OI will not be offering any additional paid positions in 2018 for our website. In addition, most paid writing opportunities are offered to our community writers first.

If none of the above options fit, return to the Contribute Page to see if another category is more appropriate.  Otherwise, continue on below:

A.  COMMUNITY WRITER

Community writers should be committed to contributing a minimum of four (4) articles in a calendar year, and may be permitted to submit up to twenty-four (24) in a calendar year.

B.  STUDENT WRITER

High school students, college students, and recent graduates interested in writing for the Oshkosh Independent have several options for contributing.  The Oshkosh Independent offers journalism internships, including single semester or ten (10) month positions.  We also offer students interested in specific topics the opportunity to write (for example, we have hosted an Oshkosh North High School student who wrote about school musicals and performances).  Students work may appear on the OI website, social media forums, and in print.

College Internship: Students may be able to complete an internship for credit with the Oshkosh Independent.  Most internships are through journalism programs, and students should check first with their internship coordinator to learn about the program’s requirements.

Internships with the Oshkosh Independent typically last for a minimum four (4) months or a full ten (10) month period.  The frequency of writing depends upon the number of credits taken, but typically the four (4) month internship requires a weekly published article, while the ten (10) month internship entails about two (2) articles per month.  Internships also offer opportunities for writers to cover events such as live music concerts or local events.

Interested students who have already connected with their internship coordinator can submit the following tooshkoshindependent@gmail.com:

i.  OSHKOSH INDEPENDENT COLLEGE INTERNSHIP APPLICATION

ii. Two writing samples (fewer than 600 words)

iii. A photography sample

– The six (6) month position requires eight (8) articles, including six (6) monthly column articles and two (2) featured articles.

– The ten (10) month position is spaced out between two (2) semesters (Feb-Nov or Sep-Jun) and includes fifteen (15) total articles.

Both the six (6) and ten (10) month positions offer the opportunity for renewal.  In addition, many students begin contributing through this option and advance into the more intensive internship position.  To contribute as a student (not for credit) or a recent grad, email us at oshkoshindependent@gmail.com.  When you submit your request to join our team, please include ALL of the following:
