Casey’s convenience stores coming to Oshkosh

Casey’s General Stores, an Iowa-based retailer, plans to open at least two locations in Oshkosh and has received approval from the Plan Commission for the first one, at 2322 Jackson Street.

The company, which says it operates the fourth largest chain of convenience stores in North America, also hopes to open an outlet on Oshkosh Avenue near the new corporate headquarters for Oshkosh Corp.  The Common Council has imposed higher design standards for that area, and Casey’s is still working on plans that will satisfy the city.

“Our understanding is that they’re trying to make a big presence in Oshkosh,” said City Manager Mark Rohloff. “So you’ll probably see more applications.”

The retailer sells gas, groceries and prepared food. Its pizza business makes it the fifth largest chain in the United States, the company said.

Casey’s operates more than 2,000 stores in 16 states and is in the midst of an expansion drive. In early March it said it had agreements in place for 140 new stores and 14 existing outlets that it plans to acquire.

Corporate officials were not immediately available for comment.
