Carrying a gun … and a gift card

Oshkosh police officers are patrolling the streets during this holiday season armed with guns–and with gift cards.

Chief Dean Smith told the Common Council Tuesday that his department received $5,000 worth of gift cards through the Lights of Christmas program  sponsored by Christian radio station Q90 FM.

Officers can use these gift cards to help needy individuals and families around the community.

When doing traffic stops, “if we see someone that’s truly in need, maybe we’ll give them a warning ticket and a gift card. Just to say, ‘Thank you, and have a good holiday,'” Smith said.
